John was born in South Dakota, moved to the peninsula in the late 1960s and graduated from Ferguson High School in 1976. He took great pride in his craft as a chef. At the age of 20, he was hired by Steve, of the former Steve’s Steak House, where a life-long fatherly bond ensued. John loved him dearly. After Steve retired briefly, he asked Big John if he would partner with him to open a new restaurant which later became known as Steve & John’s Steak & Seafood in Newport News in 93′. Big John remained dedicated, loyal and hard- working after Steve’s passing in 98 ‘ until Steve & John’s closed in 2013. He was extremely generous, intelligent, and best known by all his friends, customers and colleagues as being a prankster. His sharp wit and sense of humor provided many laughs for his customers over the years. He enjoyed cooking out, reading, bowling, playing chess, fishing, and riding his ATVs. He was a daredevil & enjoyed a challenge. He loved making people laugh as he rode his moped with his crazy helmets and flashy attire. He rode in Denbigh Days, Toys for Tots, and in the end gave back by being an organ donor. He was saved.
