Joanne Miller

On the morning of October 6th, 2018, Joanne Thomas Wainwright Miller peacefully passed away at home in the hands of her devoted children after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Joanne was born on August 23rd, 1939 in Newport News, Va. and spent the majority of her life as a resident of Seaford, Va. and member of Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford. She is proceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James H. Miller and her parents, Donald and Mary Virginia Wainwright, also of Seaford.
Joanne graduated from York High School and then the Riverside School of Professional Nursing in 1961. She spent the next 45 years attending the physical and emotional needs of her patients with the utmost care and love as “Nurse Joanne” at Riverside Hospital and The Suburban Clinic in Tabb, Va. Her gentle touch as a nurse reached out much further as she was also the caregiver to her family, friends and community outside of the office. Joanne worked tirelessly for the well being and health of others and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and March of Dimes. Joanne retired in 2006 but continued to nurse the bodies and spirits of loved ones old and new until she left us to be with her Eternal Father.
Joanne loved many things in life. She was the kindest advocate for all of God’s children including animals whose wellbeing she never lost her devotion to even during her own illness. She loved to laugh, tell stories about the history of her family and Seaford. She loved taking her grandchildren to the park and singing along with them in the car.
Joanne is survived by her son, Phillip G. Miller and wife Lou Ann Miller, her daughter Julie Miller Gordon and husband Jim Gordon. Joanne was the Memaw and Grandmother to granddaughter Audrey Miller; granddaughter Sally Miller and Jody McNeil; grandson Ian Gordon and Nicole Cullen: and granddaughter Claire Scott Gordon. Also missing her is her sister, Kay Ware : nieces Paula Chambers, Sharon Burkhard, sister-in-law Sheila Cook, nieces Leisha Cook and Lori Hanley and nephew Shawn Cook. Joanne was also a Mother and Grandmother to many, many others in Seaford, York County, and beyond to distant shores who needed the unconditional love and care of the perfect Mom or Memaw.
Family and friends will be celebrating her incredible life of loving care with a viewing at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, Va on October 9th, 6-7 PM. A service will be held on October 10th – 1:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford, Va.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for your donations to The American Cancer Society, The Humane Society or Zion United Methodist Church in Joanne’s name.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the caring doctors and staff at Virginia Oncology Associates for their support and care of our mother these past years. You became part of her family.
