James Ray ‘JT’ Thomas

James R. Thomas, 81, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2017. He was born February, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Harold W. Thomas and Edna Thomas Hale. Jim moved to Richmond, VA in 1947. He attended Bainbridge Junior High School and two years at John Marshall High School. He then moved to Wicomico Church, V A and graduated from Northumberland County High School.
While at Northumberland he played baseball and basketball and served as President of the Student Council. He also played Sousaphone in the school band. During the summers he played baseball for Reedville in the old Chesapeake League. He was also Past Master Counselor for the Kilmarnock chapter of DeMolay. He attended the University of Richmond, graduating in 1958. He lettered in baseball at the University. At Richmond Jim was a proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Supply Officer on board the USS Enterprise and later at Naval Air Station, Memphis. After the Navy, Jim was on the Controller’s staff at Reynold’s Metals Company in Richmond. He then moved to Newport News where he was Treasurer of a moulding Manufacturer Hampton Hardwood, Inc. After that, he spent 22 years as Chief Financial Officer of a chain of men’s clothing stores. Over the years, he was at one time or another a Toastmaster, a Rotarian, a Cosmopolitan and a member of the United States Power Squadrons. He was also an avid boater and thoroughly enjoyed cruising the Chesapeake with the Great Bridge Cruising Club. He also loved going South on the Intercoastal Waterway. He is survived by the love of his life Joan, and his children Cynthia and Robert and grandsons Aaron and Brandon.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
