Gloria Jeanne Rhinesmith Nuckles

Born on November 12, 1931 at Riverside Hospital, Gloria Nuckles passed into heaven’s light on June 3, 2018. She looked forward to reuniting with her daughter, Cathy Peterson, and her husband of 55 years, Edwin Nuckles and her parents Lloyd and Mat Rhinesmith. She will also rejoice in having Daisy, Zeke, and Stormy by her side. She was surrounded by her loving family.
A lifetime resident of the Peninsula, Gloria spent her life enriching the lives of hundreds of her fellow community members. A graduate of Warwick High School and Riverside’s School of Nursing, she provided exemplary care to her patients at Riverside and Dixie Hospitals and developed lifelong friendships with many of her fellow nurses. She was a Cub Scout den mother and gladly served for years as a Girl Scout troop leader. She carried many happy thoughts of her times with her girls throughout her life. In addition to her gifts to young Peninsula residents, Gloria touched many lives as a substitute teacher in the Newport News School system. Despite her early affliction with arthritis and a devastating battle with Guillain-Barré syndrome, Gloria’s fierce determination allowed her to live a life of fulfillment. She loved her horses and her chickens, her various dogs and cats, and her birds. She travelled extensively up and down the east coast, and with the help of her granddaughters, crossed Canada by train to walk the glaciers of Alaska, shell-searched at Pawleys Island, and sailed the shores of Nova Scotia. She found peace and delight while kayaking the quiet waters of her beloved Patrick’s Creek. Despite her many adventures Mom’s/Gammy’s greatest love was to be surrounded by her family and friends. Each, in their own way, brought a sparkle to her eye whether it was Christmas, a birthday, or just an afternoon cup of coffee. She loved her church and was active in, and a founding member, of the prayer shawl knitting group at St. Luke’s Methodist Church. Her monthly prayer group of friends was a source of great support. Gloria was Mom to sons Kevin and Craig, and their wives Debbie and Shay. She was Gammy to Heather and her husband Sam, Stephanie Padrick and her husband Heath, and Erica Peterson. She was also Gammy to her great grandchildren Ashton and Lily Padrick. Wayne Peterson, a family member of 50 years and his wife Kim, and mother, Ola, and, of course, Gabe her constant companion for the last 9 years, also grieve their loss. Her remaining cousin Barbara Ann Reynolds was a constant source of love.
A memorial service for Gloria will be held on Saturday, July 28th at 1 pm at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at her home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: GBS/CIDP International Foundation (www.gbs-cidp.org) or the York County Food Bank, located at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church at 300 Ella Taylor Rd. in Yorktown Va. ( www.foodcloset.org).
