Gladys was born August 25, 1920 to the late John Henry Ferrell and Hattie Ella Ferrell of Clover, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Harry B. Owen, daughter-in-law LaDonna Gandy Owen, four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by sons Ronald H. Owen of York County, VA and Ray W. Owen and his wife Cathy of Winston-Salem, NC, grandchildren Jonathan Owen of Winter Haven, FL, Kristie Lane of Kennesaw, GA, Heather Thompson of Richmond, VA and Holly Clark of Manteo, NC, eight great-grandchildren, sister Sally Downey of Falls Church, VA, sister-in-law Elsie Ferrell of South Boston, VA and multiple beloved nieces and nephews.
Gladys’ first love was her family. “Ganny” was the happiest when she was with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. She was dedicated to her church and assumed many responsibilities over the years. Her greatest passion encompassed teaching and Christian education. She taught children’s Sunday School at Parkview Baptist Church for many years and over time served in various roles at three Baptist churches on the peninsula.
Once her sons were settled in school, she earned a teaching certificate from the College of William and Mary and began a teaching career as a substitute teacher at Briarfield Elementary School. Later she taught first grade and second grade at the Hilton Baptist private school and at Orcutt Avenue Baptist private school. Her dedication and love for her students was legendary.
After her retirement from teaching, Gladys worked for the Peninsula Dental Lab. She loved gardening, antiques and antique dolls.
The family is grateful to the dedicated professional staff at Warwick Forest Assisted Living and The Gardens at Warwick Forest for the loving and thoughtful care they provided Gladys over the past four years.
A private family graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park. Amory Funeral Home, Yorktown, VA, is handling the arrangements.
