George Kemper Hicks, Sr.
George Kemper Hicks, Sr, of Yorktown, VA, passed away on Monday, 18 June 2018. For the last few years, George fought the good fight against “the Big C,” as he called it. However, he tragically was killed in a car accident minutes from his home. George’s story begins on 16 July 1942, born the second son of Richard Latham Hicks, Sr, and Maxine DeMoville Harris of Hampton, VA then raised in Dare and Warwick. He joined his older brother Richard Latham Hicks, Sr. (wife Peggy), Gwynn’s Island, and six years later his younger brother was born, Wayne Harris Hicks, (wife Jeri), Spokane, WA. Seven years later, his sister, Jean DeMoville Hicks Alexander was born, Chattanooga, TN, (deceased). In Feb 1962, George met the love of his life, Sandra Kaye McElroy. He said he was smitten at first sight, and swept her off her feet and eloped to Camden, NC in December 1962. In 1964, George and Sandra welcomed a baby girl, Melanie Kaye Hicks (Bill). In 1969, their son, George Kemper Hicks, Jr (Deanna) arrived, and the family seemed complete until 1996, when his son had the apple of his grandfather’s eye, Dylan Kemper Hicks (Janie). He graduated from Warwick High School, in 1960, worked for 10 years at the Newport News Shipyard, and graduated cum Laude from Old Dominion University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He taught industrial arts at Grafton-Bethel and Poquoson Middle Schools. He always loved seeing his former students. He will be remembered for his children’s stories at the Hampton Roads Seventh-day Adventist Church. George was an avid reader and knowledgeable on nearly any subject. He appreciated history and was a member of Willy’s Overland Knight Registry and Antique Automobile Club of America. He loved Corvettes and flea markets. But most importantly he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, and will be missed by his family and many friends. He leaves behind many broken hearts filled with wonderful memories. The family would like to thank the nurses at Riverside Infusion Pod for their loving kindness, as well as his Doctors Chris Paschold and Mark Souther.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, 23 June 2018 in Amory Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
