Gene O. Lanier, Jr.

Gene O. Lanier, Jr., 74, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Gene was a native of Michigan and was a Peninsula resident since 2007. He was a former resident of Williamsburg and graduated from James Blair High School. He was also a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a BS and Masters Degree. Gene was a coach and teacher with the Bristol, Tennessee City Schools until his retirement, and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Gene was a loving husband to his wife of 51 years, Sheree; and loving father to his son Matthew Lanier of New York City and his daughter Laura Lanier Smith (Aaron) of Roanoke. He is also survived by his brother Denny Lanier (Kitty); sisters Sandy Stotesberry, Barbara Green (Bobby), Mary Vee Ledford (Terry), Mae Berrios, Simone Perviance (Joe) and 3 grandchildren, Grafton, Blake and Anna Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. C. Douglas Akers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service and following the interment at a reception in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown, VA, 23692.
