Emidio A. Melo, Jr.

Emidio A. Melo, LtCol (Retired) USAF peacefully passed away on Friday June 29 in Yorktown, Virginia at the age of 90. Emidio retired from TAC Headquarters Langley AFB, VA in 1974 after serving a total of 27 years in service to his country, 2 years in the USMC as an Aviation Mechanic and 25 years in the USAF as a Fighter Pilot. He served in TAC Fighter units in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and a Bronze Star for his actions. His life-long love was to fly fighter planes which included the P-51 Mustang to the F-4 Phantom. After his retirement from the Air Force, Emidio went on to work for Nolan Company as a Financial Manager for 7 years. His love for education, inspired him to pursue his teaching certificate and he taught Physics and Math at Peninsula Catholic High School until he retired in 1995. He is a member of St Joan of Arc Church and was active in the Knights of Columbus achieving his 4th Degree. He was preceded in death by his parents Emidio & Rose Melo of Crowslanding CA; his son Roger Melo of Newport News, VA; and his sister Georgina Melo of Turlock, CA. Emidio is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Margie; one son Mike Melo and his wife Kathy of Yorktown, VA; three daughters Deborah Hamlin and her husband David
of Williamsburg, VA, Patricia Melo of Key Largo, FL, and Sandra Melo Howerton of Montpelier, VA; his younger brother Richard Melo of Gresham, OR; four sisters Mary Jane Silva of Modesto, CA, Rose Beltran of Crowslanding, Ca, Laura Giovannoni of Larkspur CA, and his younger sister Elsie Schimelphnig of Wyckoff, NJ; and his 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton Sunday 1 July from 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM There will be a funeral mass held at St Joan of Arc in Yorktown VA on Monday 2 July at 11:30 AM followed by burial at Peninsula Memorial Gardens, Newport News, VA.
