Ellie Mitchell, 88 was called to be with the Lord and rejoin her husband, George Mitchell, on July 13, 2017. She was born in Glenridge NJ March 29, 1929 to George Atkins and Marie Louise Lafeller. She was Christened Marie Eleanor Atkins and graduated from Montclair High School. She went on to secretarial school and moved to New York City and worked on the 23rd floor of the RCA Building. She lived in SOHO before it was popular and “rubbed elbows” with a number of celebrities. One of her fondest memories was watching the Rockettes practice from her office.
She moved to Hampton, Virginia in 1950 and met George on a blind date. They were married on June 3rd 1952 and settled in Denbigh where they raised their two children Lisa and David. She was a legal secretary for a prominent attorney for 20 years in Newport News. The family moved to Seaford in 1972. She was very active in the Yorktown Woman’s club, the Seaford Yacht Club and Yorkminster Prebyterian Church, where she was an elder. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed boating with her husband. She was devoted to her family, and her dog, Joy.
She left behind; her daughter Lisa Emde and her husband Scott; her son, David Mitchell, her five Grandchildren Michelle Lindsay, Rachel Emde, Will McBride, Scotty Emde, and Tyler Mitchell, and her two great grandchildren Tanner and Mia Lindsay along with many nieces and nephews; to cherish her memories.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Amory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Jernigan, officiating. A reception in Ellie’s honor will follow at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church Social Hall. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service.
