Bessie White Newman
Bessie White Newman, 79, beloved widow of John E. Newman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Columbus R. White; her mother, Kathryn Austin White; and brothers Ray, Earl, and William. Survivors include brother Robert and sister Marguerite (Hogge); sisters-in-law, Sue N. Presson (Phillip), Luanne N. Phillips (Ivan), and Candace N. Morgan (the late Bobby Allen), and many nieces and nephews. Bessie and John leave behind dear friends who were like family to them. In the last five years Bessie also felt the love and comfort of her Warwick Forest “family,” both at the Evergreen and, most recently, the Piedmont residence.
Bessie was a cheerful, loving person who never met a stranger, which served her well since she often worked in retail stores her husband managed. Over the years they lived in many different states, and they formed special lifetime friendships in each location. Since they were often so far away from their immediate families, their friends became their extended family.
John and Bessie retired in Winston Salem, NC, and were active, supportive members of the Pine Grove Methodist Church in Winston Salem. Bessie and John enjoyed traveling, especially cruising to many different destinations with their closest friends. Bessie had a talent for beautiful needlework and other crafts, and at one time co-owned a craft shop.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 am, on Tuesday, January 30, Williamsburg Memorial Park. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Yorktown.
